1. What is the Digital Learning Environment (DLE)?

The Digital Learning Environment (DLE) is an online learning space, designed to facilitate a collaborative teaching and learning experience for both students and staff using a variety of tools and features. These include:

  • Moodle: the University's central Virtual Learning Environment
  • Your ePortfolio (in PebblePad)
  • Lecture recordings and podcasts (in Panopto)
  • LinkedIn Learning: a high quality suite of online video-based training courses
  • Electronic reading lists in Leganto
  • Turnitin, an originality checking service for assignments

How do I access the DLE?

You can access the DLE via http://dle.plymouth.ac.uk. The DLE can also be accessed via the Portal or the University of Plymouth mobile app.

1.1.1. Setting up Moodle Courses

Shared content courses

Information on shared content courses and how to request them can be found here.

A shared content course can be requested if you need to teach the same content across more than one module course. For example, you may have the same course being delivered in Plymouth, Exeter and Truro and do not want to duplicate the content.


Subject view courses

Information on subject view courses and how to request them are available here.

Subject view courses can be requested when information is required for broad subject areas.  A good example is a lab technician in a school requires students to complete some preparatory work in order to use lab equipment safely.  The course is required across several programmes and modules in that faculty or school and needs to be visible to all students to complete.




1.1.2. Using the Moodle mobile app

Downloading the app 

Firstly, download the Moodle mobile app, currently available for iOS and Android.

Logging in

After opening the app, you will be prompted to enter your site address, for this you should enter: http://dle.plymouth.ac.uk, then select 'Connect!'.

Next, you will be asked for your username and password, please enter your details here.


Once, you have logged in, you will have access to the DLE via the Moodle mobile app. 


You will now be able to access resources and activities. Please note, not all activities are currently supported within the Moodle mobile app, if you are currently trying to access something which isn't supported, please access the DLE via a web browser.

1.1.3. Where can I find past exam papers?

Past exam papers are available via Moodle.

To locate exam papers: 

  • Go to any programme or module site
  • Look for the ‘Resource Store’ block (this block is usually located in the bottom left of module sites)
  • Click “Past Exam Papers”

1.1.4. What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is an Internet-based 'originality checking tool' which allows documents to be compared with content on the Internet, in journals and in an archive of previously submitted works.

It is a formative tool that makes it easy for students to review their citations and referencing as an aid to learning good academic practice. Student access to Turnitin is now only possible where their module leaders are actively using Turnitin in the module. It enables academics to cross-reference students' work against a number of resources with which they might otherwise not come into contact. Turnitin is used by 80% of universities in the UK.

Staff and students should be aware that Turnitin is not the only method of checking for originality and other means are readily available.

1.2. What is PebblePad?

PebblePad is an electronic portfolio system designed to support staff and students in their personal development. It is completely web-based and works by providing you with a flexible way to plan, record and reflect on your learning. 

Your PebblePad account is personally managed by you. You can use it to create records of your learning, experiences and achievements in order to evidence the growth of your knowledge and skills.  You can easily share your learning 'assets' with employers, tutors and peers, internal and external to the university, and invite comment and collaboration.

How to access PebblePad

You can access your PebblePad account by going to http://eportfolio.plymouth.ac.uk/ and entering your university username & password. Alternatively, you can go via https://dle.plymouth.ac.uk/ and choosing 'My ePortfolio' from the Tools & Resources drop down menu. 

Help and support 

Student Help

Nursing students who are returning to their course after a period of interruption may not see the correct workbook in their Resources or Assets. If this is the case, you will need to contact the Digital Education team on behalf of the student.

Accessing your ePortfolio when you leave the University

If you are about to graduate or leave the University, you are entitled to a free Personal Pebble+ account for life. This is provided so that you can take your PebblePad assets with you and continue to use PebblePad to support your personal learning and professional development as you move on to the next stage of your career.

How do I download the mobile app?

The University of Plymouth app for iOS is available on the App Store, and the University of Plymouth app for Android is available on the Play Store. Alternatively, you can still use the mobile app on any device via the University of Plymouth app for the web.

Logging in

Once downloaded, you will need to log in to view your information (e.g. your timetable). Please log in with your University of Plymouth Username and Password.

Note: This will need to use your Username and NOT your email address.

1.3.1. Selecting calendars in your timetable via the University of Plymouth mobile app


Depending on whether you are a student or member of staff, you will see multiple timetables via the ‘My timetable’ feature in the mobile app. These are:

  • Course timetable
  • Student timetable (only available to current students)
  • Staff timetable (only available to current staff)

Course timetable

A course timetable will show every event scheduled for your course. This will include every lecture and every seminar. Even though you might have been instructed to attend one seminar group, this calendar will show all scheduled seminar sessions.

Student timetable

A student timetable is a personalised timetable for your course and will show you the sessions that you should attend. This include every lecture and the appropriate seminars. If you are seeing the wrong seminar group in your student timetable, please contact your Faculty office as this information will need to be changed in your timetable.

Note: This calendar is only available to current students.

Staff timetable

A staff timetable is a personal timetable for staff which will display all the sessions you are teaching on.

Note: This calendar is only available to current staff.

Selecting calendars on iOS devices  

  1. Tap the 'My timetable' tile in the app
  2. Tap the 'Calendars' option (at the bottom of the screen)
  3. Toggle on or off the calendar you wish to see, then tap 'Done'  

Selecting calendars on Android devices

  1. Tap the 'My timetable' tile in the app
  2. Tap the 'Cog' icon (at the bottom-right corner of the screen)
  3. Toggle on or off the calendar you wish to see, then tap 'Done' 


1.4. What is LinkedIn Learning?

Every student and staff member has access to LinkedIn Learning, a continually growing and evolving library of training videos and tutorials covering a wide range of software, technologies, business topics and transferable skills. Students and staff members can take advantage of free 24/7 access to the entire library of training; this includes:

  • Over 5,500 courses with over 204,500 videos
  • Rich features - bookmark videos, chapters or courses for future reference, create collections, make notes and undertake knowledge checks
  • Search the vast array of courses by subject, software, author or keyword
  • Learning paths - Industry experts teach you the knowledge and skills to start your career

1.4.1. How to access LinkedIn Learning
  1. You can access LinkedIn Learning directly by visiting linkedin-learning.plymouth.ac.uk.

  2. You will be prompted for your University of Plymouth login credentials (username and password). If you have previously logged in before it may automatically log you in.

  3. If you had chosen to link your personal LinkedIn profile during the activation process, you will be prompted to then enter your LinkedIn profile details (email and password)*.

    * Please note these might be different to your University of Plymouth credentials (email and password) and will be information that you chose when setting up your LinkedIn profile. If you have forgotten your username or password for your personal LinkedIn profile, please contact LinkedIn.
1.4.2. Accessing LinkedIn Learning for the first time

You can activate LinkedIn Learning using your University of Plymouth IT credentials via the login page.

  1. Login using your University of Plymouth IT credentials.

  2. You will then be asked whether you would like to link your personal LinkedIn account if you have one. To link your personal account, select ‘Connect my LinkedIn account’. You can choose to proceed without connecting one.

  3. If you have chosen to connect your personal LinkedIn account, you will then be asked to login with your LinkedIn details which are different from your University of Plymouth IT credentials. If you have forgotten your password for your personal LinkedIn account, you can reset it here.

  4. Finally, you will be asked to confirm your LinkedIn identity. Select ‘Accept and continue’.
