1.1. Commercial Services

Commercial Services

Hire and use of IT facilities for external users

Working through the University's Conference Team, central IT services can provide IT facilities and support for meetings, workshops, training events and conferences.

Events supported to date range from one day workshops using one of our training rooms, right up to one month summer schools using extensive IT facilities.  Facilities include PC labs, open access PC areas, access to wireless networking, and wireless network access in halls of residence.
Event requirements vary enormously, so costs are quoted on a bespoke basis.  As an example, however, PC lab hire is from £200 per day, with discounts for longer bookings.
For further information: see the Conference web pages or contact conference@plymouth.ac.uk (01752 588337)

Document Production Centre

The Document Production Centre is a small, dedicated professional team providing high quality support and value for money.  Their services include essential Design, Print, Photography Services and the Copier Management Program to the University and the community.

Further details are available from the DPC website.

Video and multimedia production and advice services

The University has an in-house team of experts providing a range of video and multimedia support.  As well as production our experts offer advice on filming, editing, production (including live production environments), lighting and audio, broadcast, podcasting/webcasting, audio recording, and managing the content created.

Our services are also on offer to corporate customers.  All of the services above can be accessed by those outside of the University; and for our corporate clients we also offer material and advice for embedding in web sites.  For more information please contact:

01752 567294 or 01752 587132
1.2. Information Specialists (librarians) Contacts
The Academic Engagement Team is a team of Information Specialists (librarians), each of whom has responsibility for specific subject areas. They are there to provide subject and research support for students and staff.

You can contact your Information Specialist by telephone or email with any subject-related enquiries, (please see the attached guides below).

1.3. Careers Service
Question: Where can I find the Careers Service?
Answer: The Careers Service is located in the Roland Levinsky Building www.plymouth.ac.uk/careers
1.4. Contacts - resources for new programmes

Who do I contact for authorisation of resources for new programmes?

Academic staff planning new or revised programmes should involve the relevant Information Specialist and local IT support team in discussions about resource requirements.  They will be aware of the TIS resources that are already available, can advise on the implications of programme proposals, find solutions to potential difficulties, and put you in touch with other specialists if necessary.  As well asmaking sure that there are sufficient library and IT resources, they will also be interested in programme delivery methods (e.g. students based primarily off-campus, telematic lectures, innovative assessments etc.).

Official ‘sign-off’ of resource forms is normally done by Jane Gosling or Julie Luxton (Library resources) and Adrian Holmes (IT resources).

1.6.1. Harvard Referencing

We recommend the following guide:

Pears, R. & Shields, G. (2013) Cite them right: the essential referencing guide. 9th edn. Basingstoke: Palgrave

Also available electronically via Primo and the Library Subject Guides: http://plymouth.libguides.com/referencing

This is a generic guide and is suitable for all University of Plymouth students using the Harvard referencing style. In addition to the online guide, there are multiple copies available in the library, however you should check your module handbook for any specific guidelines required by your department.

Students can also have a free EndNote Online account to assist them with referencing. A Plymouth cite them right style has been created for EndNote Online.

1.6.2. What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is an Internet-based 'originality checking tool' which allows documents to be compared with content on the Internet, in journals and in an archive of previously submitted works.

It is a formative tool that makes it easy for students to review their citations and referencing as an aid to learning good academic practice. Student access to Turnitin is now only possible where their module leaders are actively using Turnitin in the module. It enables academics to cross-reference students' work against a number of resources with which they might otherwise not come into contact. Turnitin is used by 80% of universities in the UK.

Staff and students should be aware that Turnitin is not the only method of checking for originality and other means are readily available.

Further help is available on the DLE.
